St Andrew's Prep - Eastbourne

Stimulating the Imagination

Home to 370+ day and boarding pupils up to the age of 13 and celebrating its 140th anniversary this year, St Andrew’s Prep, Eastbourne is just a five minute walk to the sea and the foot of the South Downs.  The school’s talented staff is dedicated to preparing its pupils for our fast changing, high-tech world; giving them lifelong-learning and problem-solving skills alongside leadership and teamwork opportunities and, perhaps most important of all, the tools to become good citizens.  In short, St Andrew’s Prep is stimulating the imagination, creativity and inventiveness of every pupil while equipping them with the essential qualities of self-discipline, resilience, honesty, kindness and compassion.

We believe we need to be educating the children how to form opinions properly, how to substantiate ideas, how to self-reflect without over-analysing, how to listen and value other opinions, how to think critically and how to be aware of the wider community. In other words, we want to expand the minds of every pupil so that they become more resilient, more compassionate and better listeners.  Every child is in a sports team, not just the elite; every child can choose to be in a drama production, everybody takes part in music and the vast majority play at least one instrument.  The school is extremely successful.  A surprising number of children have reached Grade 8 music over the years and St Andrew’s Prep has won many county and national titles.

With nature on its front door, St Andrew’s Prep offers unique Forest and Beach Schools – both providing opportunities to complement classroom study with outdoor learning.  The children can try woodcarving, pond-dipping and shelter-building as well as explore the shore line or simply play games using the natural resources available to them.

After-school and optional Saturday morning activities ensure children learn far more than key academic subjects.  From fencing to skiing and pottery to mountain biking, there is a vast array of options available to inspire the enthusiastic youngsters.

Over the last two years, St Andrew’s Prep pupils gained 49 scholarships (academic, sport music, drama and dance) to schools including Brighton College, Eastbourne College and tonbridge - testimony to the multi-faceted abilities of the children in our care.

St Andrew’s Prep is a non-selective co-educational school.  Most are day pupils but 30 to 40 boarders and flexi-boarders live in the heart of the school.

On average, each class has sixteen pupils – small enough for individual attention if required but large enough for pupils to find like-minded friends.

Headmaster, Gareth Jones says, “You only get one shot at childhood and I firmly believe that St Andrew’s Prep gives its pupils opportunity, time and space to embrace everything any child could possibly want.  The confidence, happiness and fulfilment of the children in our care are our absolute priorities.”

St Andrew’s Prep’s was awarded the top grade in its most recent Independent Schools Inspectorate report (2015).
